Maryland/Rio de Janeiro

The Maryland-Rio Partnership was initiated in the mid-1960s based on several common features: Chesapeake Bay (Maryland) and Guanabara Bay (Rio), Atlantic Ocean coast and significant fishing activity, a similar balance between urban and rural populations, and a geographical coincidence in that Maryland wraps half of the Nation’s capital in the same way that the “old” state of Rio surrounded the city of Rio de Janeiro, at that time the Federal Capital of Brazil.

Maryland-Rio Partners provides opportunities for volunteers to participate in mutually beneficial training programs and community-based projects, as well as in technical, educational and cultural exchanges. Citizens on both sides of the partnership work together to determine joint needs and aspirations and to mobilize people and resources to carry out joint projects. Our program areas include Natural Resource Management, Agriculture, Democratic Initiatives, Education, Health, Economic Development, Arts and Culture, and Youth Programs.
